    What’s New in the Stores

Whiplash from Undersea Squid Sub Gift Set 9-Pack / Mission Force Police & Space Sets

Undersea Squid Sub Gift Set & 9-Pack found at Target while the Mission Force Police & Space Sets were found at Osco Drug and the blister carded models were purchased from Wal-Mart. All in the western Chicago area.
    The Matchbox Fire Station

Above: MF-1 Fire Station US labels / Below: MF-1 Fire Station European Labels (green roof)

Above: G-10 Fire Station Gift Set (red roof & US labels)This issue I’m featuring Fire Stations from the mid 60’s. The red roof Fire Station was the regular issue. It came three ways…MF-1 with just the building or G-10 Gift set with four models included. And later the G-5 gift set which appears to be the harder variation to obtain. You will notice below I have a picture from the 1964 catalog. It features the never released Ambulance Depot. This building was to feature a green roof. For reasons I don’t know (If someone can shed some light on this) this item was not produced. But the green roof buildings were. So they were used as fire stations. You will notice the box art shows the green roof as well. The MF-1 was priced at $3.00…..we can only dream of those prices!!!

These Fire Stations are from the Steve Gloss collection. Thank you, Steve for letting me photograph them.

Models we would love to see made….
This is a trial page I’m setting up to see if anyone is interested in sending me pictures of models (cars, trucks, motorcycles, etc…) that you would love to see as a Matchbox. They can be classics or new, it doesn’t matter to me. Since the design team will read this report, us collector’s just might come up with a model or two that they never thought of. I will post as many pictures that I can in each report. Thank you…..

The above model is a Polaris 700 Twin

Who can forget the 1975 AMC Pacer

Here we have the 2014 Honda Crosstour

    1948 Tucker Torpedo

    1971 Buick Riviera

    A word on Code 3’s

In my last report, I featured models created by Fabrice Declercq. Those little beauties were really nice. Here is another one he did as well…….. Now the code 3 issue is a fairly heated topic among some of us collectors. When models are done for personal use and not resold, it’s like having a hobby within the hobby and I totally endorse the rescuing of models that were damaged over the years. Lately, there has been a wide selection of rare, preproductions, and Brazilian issues being sold on e-bay that are repaints and are listed as such. The problem is that they are done so well that in several years nobody is going to be able to tell the difference between a repaint and the actual rare item. I believe this is going to hurt the hobby as well as someone’s pocketbook!! I have the opinion that if I don’t have the model, there is no substitute for the real thing. I welcome your comments on this subject.

    Cheers Keith.
I’m quite interested to see what the premium line is like, the casting line up looks really promising. I just pray that the execution is to a high standard.

I’d like to have more information about the silver Rover 3500 pre-pro! Does it have black sunroof?

Thanks for posting the stuff. I think the premium series will be a really nice one. It is a shame I will not be collecting them.

Looking at the new issues, the Blockade Buster reminds me of version 2 of the 2014 debut, and I am not so sure on the Chevy Pick Up. I like the model, but am not sure whether I like green wheels.

The Q&A is a bit hit and miss for me. It is good that the Range Rover Evoque is still being developed. However, will it be before this year finishes as MB70 or move again to next year? It is sad to hear that the sports cars are not being increased, as these are some of the best sellers, and the “possibly in the future” bit on the hatches makes me believe that we will not see anything major next year for them.

But again I am sad to see that the Toy Fair model is a generic one, and not even one of the latest castings. I would think that for a Toy Fair model, the best thing to do would be to try and utilize one of the best of the new castings for the year, a licensed one at that, to really show off what Matchbox can do. I know there was a Toyota Tacoma done for Albuquerque and a Mack Pumper for Everett’s Golf Tournament. So perhaps they should have done the the Mustang Police or something. I don’t know. Mind you, what am I saying. Last year they did the Dump Dozer, and they struggled to give them away on the secondary market. As a completist it saved me a chunk of money. The Blaze Blitzer will not be really popular and thus prices will be lower, saving me money. Sooooooo…. Oh I don’t know. It is a good/bad thing. Ha ha!

Now on to the prepros. I do like a prepro (or 2, or 10). Firstly, shouldn’t the bottom left one be Hell Raiser, not Hairy Hustler? I do like the ones bottom right though, a nice selection of 1990s prepros. I remember a number of years ago at a MICA UK Convention there was somebody selling a whole bunch of Rover 3500 prepros, all with a variety of tests on the opening sunroof mechanism. Most of them were silver prepros, and I had not long got my silver one. I looked at them and admired the different stages of testing on how the sunroof was to be made. But I did not purchase any of them. I wish I had now. But I have to ask, where is the Porsche Turbo prepro?

    :) :D :P

    Hello Larry and other collectorfriends,

    Thanks for another great report.
I like the WHAT IS IN THE STORES feature ! This could be done per report and per region. Mattel can then see where the distribution problems are.
Normally we haven’t any Matchbox in the stores here in The Netherlands but sometimes a cheap chain store sell them. This happened just a couple of days ago at 1.19 euro each which is very cheap for European Matchbox models but still much more then the 1 usd in the USA.

You may want to take a look at the yellow pages from my 2004 Giftset CD here on the Vintage British Diecast Forum:

Thanks for the report, Larry, and Keith for posting it.

This is a pretty disappointing report, to say the least. The Blockade Buster is very attractive, but like Tilley said, it is awfully similar to the second version in this year’s mainline. The only substantial difference is that the tracks are black as opposed to tan, and I can’t even buy it because it is a part of a Mission Force Set.

The Chevy K1500 does not look attractive at all, and this does not appear to be the modified version. I do look forward to seeing what they changed about it, because it is really starting to look dodgy.

As far as the questions submitted, a good portion were mine (thanks Larry). However, the answers were not at ALL what I was looking for.
No. The ratio will be similar this year.” Are you fricking kidding me?! The same ratio? The new models list was clearly a tantalizing representation of the mainline, and I should have known better. I thought with two new cars (Model S, Cayman) we would see a higher representation of cars. And, they often said licensed models were making a comeback. I really thought 2015 would be an improvement.

Then, The Blaze Blitzer is the Toy Fair model? What? Once again, everyone from the Gathering said the Team mentioned a huge comeback in licensed models, so why would they represent their entire 2015 mainline with a generic?

The small light in the cast of shadows is the fact that the Range Rover Evoque is still being developed, although we have known about it for three years now.

The list of ‘Supreme Heroes’ models is attractive, and it is nice to see that older, un-modified castings are being used so the lightbars are separate. Still, then why is MB933 Dodge Charger being used instead of MB846?

Tsk tsk tsk. Matchbox, what are you doing?

The Toyfair model is at least a better choice then this one for 2014 which could not have been worse.

    Nice work, Larry.
I just cannot get excited about a premium Matchbox line that does not reduce the plastic content AND does not include an illustrated box. So, what, we get the 4-side tampo print as a premium feature? Sorry, Matchbox, that’s not good enough. If this line is targeted at adult collectors, then give us an adult product. We adults (many of us, anyways) grew up with high metal content (a great album title) and picture boxes.
So, why is Mattel not giving us this stuff? Autoworld offers both in their mid-range line. Tomica, even at the lower levels, maintains heritage with the picture box + a working feature.

I just don’t feel like Mattel is in love with quality. I believe there are car lovers at Mattel. I truly do. But it takes more than that. There needs to be a love affair with getting better. There needs to be product passion. All I am seeing is cost-cutting.
    We deserve better.

I am becoming embarrassed admitting i collect Matchbox when adults continue to write stupid and silly questions and get stupid and silly answers from total spanners working for Mattel.

    Example.

Are there any plans to improve distribution in Europe? We always strive to improve distribution.

Is that so? Well i have news for you, as actually you are doing a very poor job of it and best you get a job working at Maccy D,s selling burgers.

Hell no Bill. They’d probably leave the meat out in an effort to cut costs! 😆

I got sick of waiting for Mattel to get their shit together and got the Majorette Evoque. Can’t see the Matchbox version being even half as good to be honest.

Bill, I think when they will be employed at Maccy, the selling of burgers will drop by at least a 85%. !

Has it really come to this? Look at that red water vehicle 4th one down. It looks cheap cheap cheap and badly put together. Why would anyone collect this. The bottom has fallen out of Matchbox and is now unrepairable. The old bosses at Lesney and even Universal would be firing butts for the next thee weeks if they could see this brand now.

One of the top selling toys in the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s and now a Matchbox to a child these days is just a box to hold Matches. Mattel have just done one on the brand. Crushed it out of existence in favour of hot wheels. Tomica and Majorette have got it right. I am proud of Matchbox Lesney history which was untamed brilliance and top quality but the future looks grim for the brand now, especially outside America.

Tomica, please make a bid on Matchbox and save it from the Walmart equivalent Mattel. Two ruthless businesses intent on crap quality for all.
